Up until now, blu-ray playback support in Linux has been very complicated and quite an aggravating experience. First you would have to hope you had the right BD-ROM drive and that there was a hacked firmware for you to flash it with. Then you had to hope the correct AACS keys were out on the interwebs for the blu-ray disc you wanted to watch. Once you had the right drive and the right keys, you had to dump the entire blu-ray disc to your hard drive and play it from there.

High-level Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida recently told Play3 that the future Playstation 4 will use optical storage discs such as Blu-ray for its game library.

According to Anthony Severino of Playstation Lifestyle, Sony will have to  "go above and beyond" the current Blu-Ray format if it is to "withstand" the standard PlayStation 10-year lifecycle.

"While Blu-Ray is here to stay and certainly has plenty of life left in it, so does the PlayStation 3," wrote Severino.

Sharp is known for their Aquos HDTV series. Recently, the company displayed a brand new model that they plan to release near the end of the year. The company didn’t release the name yet, but it will feature a 60” screen size and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. The major feature however is that they come with a built-in Blu-ray player. They also are capable of displaying the new 3D HDTV format. Unfortunately, the company did not release any additional information at this time, but more will be released later in the year.

The Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA) confirmed that a new Blu-Ray disc format capable of displaying 3D images on properly-equipped televisions will soon be available.

It looks like Buffalo is really racing to embrace USB 3.0, and hot on the heels of its USB 3.0 external hard disk is its BR-X1216U3 USB 3.0 Blu-ray burner. Supporting burning speeds of up to 12x for single or dual layer Blu-ray discs.

Returning to the idea they tried back during the HD-DVD days, Universal Home Video has decided to once again create combo packs that feature a standard DVD copy as well as a high definition Blu-ray disc.

While Universal has already offered all of these films on DVD and many of them as Blu-ray discs, the combination offering is a way to offload old product while simultaneously hooking the customer on the latest and greatest.
