Will Blu-Ray replace DVD?
To be sure, novel developments do tend to overtake the old. For example, the silent movie is replaced by talkies. It seems somewhat inevitable that as the most recent market entrant the Blu-ray will become the cool thing to have. The older dvd will over time be considered old fashioned and dvd wholesalers will flock to the newer discs. So one item in favor of the Blu-ray becoming the digital video of choice is the inevitability of technology and progress.
Also, the Blu-ray delivers a better product. It has much more storage capacity of its predecessor disc. For customers of wholesale dvds, that translates into being able to have hours and hours of TV shows, for example, on not as many discs. So the entire 5th season of the popular "desperate housewives" takes four discs on Blu-ray instead of five. Not an inconsiderable saving of space if you are a big collector.
But why won't the blue laser model take over the place of the dvd in the immediate future? Why won't dvd wholesalers be turning away from the dvd?
First, the Bluray is costly! Even if you only fork over a few dollars more per disc, that can be a lot. Plus you have to have a Blu-ray machine because your current dvd player won't play Blu-ray.
The second reason Blu-ray may not overtake the field is as follows. Users cannot always discern the difference between Blu-ray and disc quality. So why would you pay more, especially when you can get good prices on wholesale dvds?
Third, and probably the most telling, people like to cart their dvds with them! They take them to a friend's house where only a dvd player is available. They want to be able to insert them in their computer secretly while pretending to listen to a dry lecture. They want to watch them in flight. Blu-ray players are not that accessible yet and may never be.
So wholesale dvds of the traditional type continue to have an advantage in flexibility and portability.
