Blu-Ray Technology- The Latest DVD Version

Blu-Ray discs, the latest DVD version has triggered several queries in our mind like how the devices are different from regular DVDs or whether we need a special player to run the disc format. Let’s find what tech support specialists explain.

Want blu-ray?

Microsoft has told CVG that it considers digital media – and not the Blu-Ray disc – the ‘future of home entertainment’.

Calls for Microsoft to increase the capacity of its games media have grown since Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi said that Capcom had to cut content from the Xbox 360 version of the game due to size restrictions of the DVD format.

However, director of Xbox and Entertainment at Microsoft Stephen McGill said this week:

New DRM takes aim at pirates

FileShareFreak has a very interesting report out today about Cinavia DRM, which is a new audio watermarking technology that takes aim at pirates, and those trying to playback movie downloads via their PlayStation 3s.

The site says the watermarking works by "comparing the source of the audio to the format in which a movie was released (ie theatrical or commercial disc), and if the watermarked audio source detects a difference, the movie will either be mute (but most likely not play at all)."

BD-J

BD-J (or BD Java) is the name given to the Java-based software that will be included on BD-ROM discs and all Blu-Ray Disc players. This will help provide the Blu-ray menus and many other features. On DVDs, menu's are made up of segments of MPEG video, or still frames. BD-J and the interactivity layer used by HD DVD, iHD, are far more advanced and will offer greater features than DVD. The Blu-ray group is using a specification from Europe called JEM.

Blu-ray date for 'Avatar'

Director James Cameron has announced that his epic blockbuster hit Avatar will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in April, although the first version released will not be in 3D.

The original Cameron quote is as follows: "It's all right on schedule. We'll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that's our plan as of right now, and that'll be pretty much bare bones. And then we'll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime."

Blu Ray Technology History

Remember VHS? Of course you do. Back in the day everybody used to play movies in their VCRs, at least until the invention of—and eventual transition to—the DVD. Believe it or not, the DVD was introduced in the US all the way back in 1997, so suffice it to say it has had plenty of time as the number one video storage medium.

Can iTunes HD Replace Blu-ray?

clearly remember the moment I knew I would never buy another physical CD and would buy all my music online. Since then, I’ve been waiting for the moment when I would know that I could buy all my movies online. In November, Apple announced that it was adding Disney movies in high definition to the iTunes Store. I’ve spent the last few months debating with myself if this heralded the end of buying physical media for movies.

In a word: No

In two words: Not Yet

Will 3D save the Blu-ray format?

That's the optimistic forecast among home video executives -- and the impetus for what has become an aggressive ramp-up to create the necessary tools for 3D-enabled Blu-ray discs.

"Many people believe 3D is going to get Blu-ray a renewed life in the market," says Ahmad Ouri, head of strategy, technology and marketing at Technicolor. "There are mixed reports about how successful Blu-ray has been. 3D is one feature that is definitely going to differentiate Blu-ray from conventional DVD."
