Having won the war over HD-DVD, it would seem Blu-ray would have clear sailing into a very successful and bright future. While success has not been as sudden as most would have liked, there are signs that Blu-ray is gaining ground. Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray DVD Players have seen steadily increasing sales over the past two years, giving hope that the format has finally gotten a foot-hold into the public's awareness. Both, however, still come up short when compared to DVD sales.

While Toshiba has reluctantly embraced the Blu-ray format, its former HD-DVD ally Microsoft is still refusing to budge. Earlier, its CEO Steve Ballmer had hinted at a Blu-ray addon for the company's Xbox 360 to gadget blog Gizmodo. But this turned out to be a "miscommunication" according to a Microsoft spokesperson, as Ballmer was referring to the PC market instead.

More than a year after Sony declared victory in the format war, it appears that Microsoft is officially embracing Blu-ray, to an extent. In an interview with Gizmodo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the Xbox 360 will eventually be received a Blu-ray add-on drive.
