If you think that the 50GB capacity of Blu-ray discs just isn’t enough, then we have some good news for you. The new BDXL format will offer a capacity of up to 128GB (write once), or 100GB (rewritable).

That’s because it uses three to four layers, so you need a more powerful laser. The format is an extension, so they may be made to work with existing devices, but we aren’t sure what kind of capacities that would yield.

The consortium behind the Blu-ray Disc format, expect the 25GB-per-layer optical medium to actually replace the current DVD technology within three years. It looks like the highly anticipated 3D movie of the year will not be coming out to disc in 3D until next year. In a recent press release today, James Cameron announced that Avatar will be released in DVD and Blu-ray as previously mentioned. However, this release will only have the movie on the disk and won’t include any special features or those annoying movie trailers that everyone hates. Instead, included in the box will be a code and a webpage that will direct the customer to an online website called The Avatar Program.

Blu-ray costs holding PS3 back

Is Blu-ray the root of Sony's troubles in the gaming space? Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's director of product management, seems to think so.

Speaking to Edge magazine in a recent interview, Greenberg said that because "Sony bet on the physical disc" for entertainment, it's facing "associated costs" that might be holding the PlayStation 3 back.
